This week the story of Rom Houben made the news headlines. Rom was in a car accident in 1983 that left him severely brain damaged. He had been diagnosed as being in a ‘permanent vegetative state’ since the time of the accident.

Then, in 2006, neurologist Steven Laureys did a reassessment of Houben’s condition using state of the art brain scanning equipment. His conclusion was that Houben showed signs of being conscious ...

Michael Shermer, the president of the Skeptics Society in the USA, gives a lecture on what it is that skeptics are all about: the type of things we're interested in, and the way we examine them.

There's also a section illustrating just how easy it is for us to hear (or see, etc.) things when we're already primed to do so. This is illustrated using the lyrics from "Stairway to Heaven" and is a superb example of this effect.

It is taking advantage of others' misfortune in a most despicable way yet it seems to help their profile - amongst believers ...

Skepticism is an honest search for knowledge. It is an approach to claims akin to the scientific method. It is a powerful and positive methodology (a collection of methods of inquiry) that is used to evaluate claims and make decisions. It is used to search for the (provisional) truth in matters and to make decisions that are based on sound reasoning, logic, and evidence. Skepticism is based on a simple method: doubt and inquiry. The idea is to neither initially accept claims nor dismiss them; it’s about questioning them ...
