    Re: David Icke

I strongly suspect that David Icke has, or at least certainly had, mental health problems.

I actually don't like to see how he gets exploited on TV. It seems that producers will have him on their programmes as he comes over as completely deluded and his ideas are so ridiculous that we can all have a good laugh at him.

If we stop and consider that we're being encouraged to laugh at someone with mental health issues, it begins to look rather unsavoury.

Ive only seen him on TV once, I believe it was on Wogan. It was disturbing to watch, like a car crash that you cannot look away from.

David Icke Appeared on Wogan 20 year ago. Since then he has visited more than 22 countries and gave lectures all over the world, and wrote lots and lots of books. Someone somewhere must be listening to him!

    Hi Zaira,

It certainly seems that some people are buying his books, although as John says this might be motivated as much by morbid curiosity as by any actual belief in his theories.

Beware of assuming that just because he tells lots of people about his ideas, there must therefore be some truth in them. This is not a valid way of constructing an argument, it is a fallacy known as argumentum ad populum.

Similarly, just because lots of people seem to support his ideas does not make it any more likely that they are in fact correct. This is also fallacious, it's called argumentum as numerum.

You can find a definition of these two logical fallacies here.

It is only possible to judge the strength of a proposition on the basis of the evidence which supports it. David Icke does not have evidence to support many of his best-known propositions.

    Re: David Icke

Thanks, Jocky. I'm not promoting David Icke, I am merely asking questions to get other people's point of view. I'm rather open minded and my first reaction was "Rubbish!" But at the time that didn't seem very open minded to me so I thought I would fish around a bit and try to find out what the majority view was. I just wondered what type of people were listening to him. I think I have the answers I was seeking. Thank you for your help.

Fair enough, I'm glad to be of help. Making a point of looking into things and finding out the facts before you settle on a position is very good skeptical practice

The deciding factor is not "the majority view", though - that was my point about arguments to popularity. Reality is not suceptible to democracy - it is what it is, not what "the majority" would like it to be!

An open mind is a good thing - but don't let your mind get so open that your brain falls out

Here's an interesting article about open minds.

    Regards,

    Jocky

    Matt,

Wow! That was long. But thanks.

I have now had the Icke curiosity gene removed and I'm now in full recovery mode.

Thanks folks for your patience and understanding.

I love you. Have a great day!

If you go back to his forum and see the reasoning and level of argument displayed there - you will wonder why you ever bothered with it....

    Talking Re: David Icke

Trying not to go off topic (but it's still going to be reptiles ) I was on youtube just browsing as people do...

I was watching the video about the crashed spaceship on the moon

This is really funny and as I browsed thru the comments below it, the poor chap cited http://www.truthism.com/ as his source.
Intrigued I went to look (because of the size of this one page it takes a while to load even on DSL speeds)
I have never seen so much rubbish on a single page

    Yes! Bertrand Russell I think.

I have that as my signature on a completely different forum.

    Dr B,

"Your real journey into knowledge starts now......happy travelling."

Thanks for that. My journey into knowledge began quite some time ago but I know what you mean. The journey into the net is another story, however, and I'm sure you good people will steer me in the right direction
