Re: Is an undergraduate scientfiic grounding important for Parapsychology?

Parapsychology covers such a wide area. To understand all the possible natural causes for a reported paranormal incident might require a fairly deep understanding of physics, zoology, psychology, neuroscience and lots of other science.

I think a first degree in a science (other than parapsychology) would be extremely useful before doing parapsychology at any degree level. It would both introduce someone to the rigours of the scientific method as well as giving them an idea what expert to consult when necessary. I have come across papers in parapsychology journals where the authors did not appear to have consulted experts widely before publishing. Had they done so they might have reached radically different conclusions!

A solid understanding of photography and audio/visual equipment wouldn't hurt either...mind you once you have all the above I think you will find better things to occupy your time than sitting around in the dark recording and photographing thin air :)

If you have the right attitude, there is a lot of interesting science to be discovered through paranormal research. It just doesn't seem to lead to the paranormal being real ...
