From a very quick perusal of the two papers the Barcelona group got an effect because of a single large dose rather than, the more normal, much smaller doses over time.

One of the breakdown products of Aspartame is indeed Methanol. This is oxidised in the liver firstly to Formaldehyde and then to Formic Acid.

Methanol in excess is a poison and is what causes all the problems that Meths drinkers face; but in small quantities it is harmless.

There's more Methanol in a glass of orange juice (and other fruits) than you'll ever get from using Aspartame as a sweetener (!) Methanol is a normal part of our diet and our bodies cope with it very well.

As with many poisonous chemicals we ingest, it's the dosage that's the key factor and not the toxicity.

If we were to worry about micro-doses of poisons we wouldn't drink tea or coffee, and the number of chemicals in beers and wines is incredible (all sorts of organic solvents etc., and, of course, Methanol).

You'd probably have many other overdose symptoms before that happens. Whilst it's for the US formulas this PDF shows that even the drinks with the most sweetener are in the mid to high 50mg. All of these studies are done on "mg per Kilo" of body weight, the Barcelona study used 200mg/Kilo so to get the same effect you'd have to drink about 1 litre of Coke Zero per Kilo of bodyweight....

And she also appeared in "What the Bleep...", Linus Pauling still thinks mega doses of Vitamin C will cure cancer and he's a dual Nobel winner. Just because someone has been an authority it doesn't mean they can't be kooks on other subjects
