Does anyone remember the Daily Mail vs The Moonies

This was actually a landmark case for the Daily Mail.

Why do people get sucked into something like the Moonies, at least with Icke we don't have to give our life savings or anything. The Moonies are something different.

I can't remember this one but it's good to know that the Daily Wail has kept up the tradition of campaigning against nonsense and stupidity ever since.

This was a campaign during 1978, but it did stop the Moonies from recruiting as they usually did.

Only vaguely recall the case - I was a wee girl back in '78. Reading the MoS* today refreshed my memory - Mrs Moon is apparently on the prowl for new recruits in the UK.

*There was a free Slade CD with the MoS. That is my excuse and I am sticking to it.

The Moonies are still around and still a menace.

But have you noticed it is always the most 'intelligent' of society who will drift to a cult. why?

What makes you think that? I'm not sure there's any correlation between intelligence and cult membership, although there may be a correlation between depression and cult membership, that would make more sense.

It took me a while to notice that it was an "M", not a "G". Who exactly are the Moonies?
    Better sorry than safe.

    Members of the Unification Church

Called 'Moonies' because of the name of their leader, Reverend Sun Myung Moon.

Tizwas was referencing the 1978 libel action the Moonies took after the Daily Mail wrote an article calling them a cult and accused them of using brainwashing techniques to get members. The Moonies lost. More Info

Not to be confused with the inhabitants of Button Moon. Who are quite nice and don't do any brainwashing or tithing.

They do, however exhort people to "follow Mr Spoon", their power-crazed leader.

When I mean intelligent, I mean University graduatates.

Well, academic qualifications are an indicator of intelligence, but I still don't see why you think university graduates are more likely to become a member of a cult - have you got a cite for that?

Re: Does anyone remember the Daily Mail vs The Moonies

I don't think that the 'most intelligent in society' will 'drift' into a cult, but I do see the appeal to cults to target University Students. There would be a ready supply of idealistic, emotionally vulnerable young adults at your average uni who have little real world experience and away from the protection of their family and friends. And all in one place!!

It is perhaps suprising on the face of it that inteligence is no great defence against the mind control techniques used in cult recruitment. One might otherwise think that the more inteligent would see through these tactics but this doesn't seem to be the in any way guarenteed.
