Thread: Lunacy from Wales

    Lunacy from Wales

I thought I posted this earlier, but there was such a red mist before my eyes I probably clicked the wrong button or something. If it is somewhere else, apologies.
Another apology - I'm such an old non-tech fart, I don't know how to put a link here; perhaps someone else could oblige?
You may have seen the item in today's (22 Dec) BBC News Website, concerning an outpouring of nonsense from the Archbishop of Wales, who is very worried about a new phenomenon - wait for it - Atheistic Fundamentalism. Among much other nonsense, he attributes to this dangerous - erm - danger, the occasional renaming of Christmas and the avoidance of Christian symbolism and names. He must know, everyone knows, for Pete's sake, that these silly concessions are absolutely nothing to do with Atheists, but are over-correct attempts to avoid upsetting people of other faiths.
Regarding the general danger to life as we know it, as Dawkins has pointed out, Atheist suicide bombers are not very thick on the ground. It wasn't atheists who destroyed the World Trade Center, or blew each other up for years in Northern Ireland, and it's not atheists who are trying to subvert scientific education in the USA.
Anyway, what is a fundamentalist? I take it to be someone who is guided solely by an impregnable belief in some "revealed" scripture. Atheist don't go in for that. They - shudder -think for themselves.
If I can find an address, I'm going to send the archbishop a letter that will scorch his eyebrows.
    End of rant.

    Re: Lunacy from Wales

There's plenty of lunacy in Wales, I thought this might be about holy cows or claims to be descended from Owain Glyndwr or something. I was about to get all knee-jerkily defensive of my adopted home!

But it's just another whiney god-botherer totally misunderstanding the whole concept of atheism. The whole bogus "Winterval" thing's been dragging on a few years now. Write that letter skirrid, but I don't expect you'll get anywhere.

Does anybody remember countless debates about moral issues when the right used to froth at the mouth and rail against the idea of "moral equivalence" if anybody dared to bring up some of their own less savoury episodes? I rather think I hear a pot calling.....

Seren - if you live in Wales, you might be able to guess where I got my user name (SKIRRID5) from. Oi were born and raised in Hereford, and the Skirrid mountain in Monmouthshire is visible from parts of Herefordshire.
One Herefordshire claim to fame I'm not too keen on: Alfred Watkins was a Hereford man, him as "discovered" ley lines.

I lived there for 14 years, surrounded by astrologers, drop-outs, drug addicts, and druids. Some people were in all these categories, others were nut cases of undefined category. All stark raving mad. And sheep. I preferred the sheep.

I really meant merely the company of sheep - not your actual carnal knowledge. Honest.

Peacock wrote a verse referring to the old stories of Welshmen sneaking across the border to steal sheep:
    The mountain sheep are sweeter
    But the valley sheep are fatter;
    We therefore deem it meeter
    To carry off the latter

As long as they only wanted them for food...

Yep, this guy would look perfectly normal where I lived in West Wales. As just one example, once I remember being conscious of something going on outside our house. One of our children got up from the breakfast table, looked outside, sat down again. He said 'its just a couple of blokes outside dressed in bright orange hugging and kissing'. Nobody expressed surprise.

So a good present for a Welshman would be gumboots and velcro gloves.
    Worst signature ever.

Nah - they all have them already.

It's a shame about the woo, because I absolutely love Wales. I will most definitely retire there (hopefully when I'm 50 if all goes to plan).

I'm weird like that. I love French people, too.
