Thread: "Alternatives"

    Re: "Alternatives"

I really hate those kind of posts where people are sarcastic and make out that we have done them a favour by mentioning them. It's a kind of lame-o response really. No real substance- no offer to discuss things, no questions about what we might find so silly about the book or ideas. Just defensiveness.

I'd have more respect for people if they posted openly requesting dialogue and debate. Sorry Dr, I don't mean to sound mean, but it's late and I'm cranky. Give us somethin' interesting to read!

You have done me the honour of not checking out any of my work properly, especially the astrophysics, so that you truly feel in the position to give me a fair and balanced review.

You have just fully initiated me into the legions of the scientific mavericks. Thank you.

    Cheers!

    Dr Samanta-Laughton,

You used to work as a "a holistic doctor at the Bristol Cancer Help Centre," which is now "Penny Brohn Cancer Care". Is this the place that offers 5-day residential courses for cancer sufferers (at a subsidised £900 + starter pack) and 45-minute appointments with

    Massage or shiatsu practitioner
    Healer (2 sessions)
    ?

What sort of "healer" would that be?

    Re: "Alternatives"

Deepak Chopra himself has appeared at St James as part of the "Alternatives" programme. I've contacted the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Archbishop of London and the Church Times to express my concern about known fraudsters using St James' Church as a platform, but none of them replied.

This "friendly disclaimer" appears on the "Alternatives" website (http://www.alternatives.org.uk/Site/...ernatives.aspx)

We take great care in the selection of our programme but Alternatives may not endorse all the views expressed by presenters at our events. Although St James's Church, in its openness of heart and mind, includes Alternatives, the ideas in this programme are not necessarily representative of the Church itself.
Perhaps "Alternatives" should take greater care in the selection of its programme. Could "openness of heart and mind" be a euphemism for "enticing the spiritually needy into church in the hope that they'll return for the services"?
"If I get rid of the cancer and the person decides they don’t want treatment any more either they’re too busy, or they’re too mean with their money, or they just think they know better the cancer often comes back. And if it comes back, I can’t get rid of it a second time. My healing doesn’t work a second time."

Sorry Manjir, but the implication being made is that you're a major-league Woo Woo. One which I agree with entirely.

So I wouldn't be too pleased with yourself.

    Spot on!

Dawkins and his crew are simply repeating a pattern that has been seen at the start of every revolution in human consciousness. Trouble is, they are so entrenched in their own scientific religion that they cannot see how they have fashioned themselves into the new dogmatic establishment in the same tradition that attacked figures like Galileo.

Promise it's genuine ... from a little later in the article (2nd line para 3):
What really irks them is the fact that the practices they see as irrational relics of a bygone era are being taken up by the pubic themselves.

    Re: "Alternatives"

Quote from Punk Science: "But that mundane simplicity contains within it consciousness inherent in the very fabric of the cosmos and not just human brains, energy beyond that which we have ever known before and the eternal breath of the universe effortlessly creating high energy gamma rays and X-rays in alternate bursts. We no longer have to show distaste at the areas of the universe we cannot explain. The true scientific method starts with observation, not conclusion and what we observe can now start to be explained in a scientific manner and not just swept under the carpet."

So, as I understand it, you're saying that the universe contains consciousness. Perhaps you could expand on this by explaining which observations point to this conclusion, please? Thanks.

If all you can come up with are typos, I think it is safe to say that the progression of science is in safe hands.

To answer your questions, go to the nearest Borders/ Waterstones/amazon website and buy a copy of Punk Science. Like you say - the truth is out there.. and in your nearest bookshop.

No. The typo was just very funny.
Mulder asked a very good question that you avoided answering.

I had hoped you were on here to do more than push your book.

    From the synopsis at Amazon

Dr Samanta-Laughton offers a new model of the universe, where consciousness generates life, where black holes exist inside our bodies as well as far out in space, and where the same science explains galaxies and planets as well as human evolution, auras and chakras
    Um....?
