    Remember the Society of Homeopaths?

Someone else is now threatening the Quackometer Blog: Dr. Joseph Chikelue Obi.

As before, rather than complain to the Quackometer itself, he's threatened the ISP, demanding that the above page and this one, along with all other mentions of Obi, be taken down. It looks as if the ISP may cave in, despite the fact that no particulars of the alleged defamation seem to have been given, and the person who sent the letter doesn't actually seem to be a solicitor.

Here's a newspaper story about Joseph Chikelue Obi.

And another one about Joseph Chikelue Obi.

    More about Joseph Chikelue Obi.

A well worthwhile read. This con artist needs stopping, unfortunately unlikely to occur unless the police take an interest is a less passive fashion.

"But his 'Royal College' does not physically exist at its given address. It does, however, use a standard call answering and mail collection service to give the impression that it does.
This came as a shock to Dr Michael Kett of the Central School of Reflexology in London, who handed over several hundred sterling to the charismatic Dr Obi for accreditation by what he believed was one of the top alternative medicine colleges in Ireland.
"He said they were a group of highly respected doctors," Dr Kett recalled, adding that after a brief exchange of e-mails he had not heard from Dr Obi since."
    (fromhttp://www.independent.ie/national-n...st-266728.html)

Evidently the gullibility virus can spread from 'patient' to 'doctor'.Doesn't Kett realise that in admitting that he knowingly attempted to purchase a completely spurious marketing aid he has cast serious doubts as to his own veracity?
Then again, having just looked here http://www.reflexologycollege.com/Courses.html

I can't say that I'm overly impressed anyway.

What precisely is Kett a doctor of? I was unaware that a diploma in podiatry entitled someone to label themselves a doctor. One for the ASA?

"Doctor" isn't a protected title in the UK, so anyone can use it.

ETA: As explained by 'Dr' John Jackson here:

    True but.....

    http://www.gcc-uk.org/files/link_fil...tor_300501.pdf

    Specifically:
    30 May 2001

    STATEMENT FROM THE GENERAL CHIROPRACTIC
    COUNCIL (GCC)

Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) adjudication on a complaint about
the use of the title ‘Dr’ in a leaflet circulated by a Dr Robert Mackay

The use of the title ‘Doctor’ is not protected by law. Section 49 of the Medical Act 1983 lists titles which may be used only by registered medical practitioners and ‘Doctor’ is not amongst them. It does state that anyone who “wilfully and falsely pretends to be” a registered medical practitioner will be committing a criminal offence. The GCC’s approach to the use of the title ‘Doctor’ by chiropractors reflects the legal position. Chiropractors may use the courtesy title ‘Doctor’ provided they make clear that they are not registered medical practitioners."
