    Hollywood strikes again

    Sharon Stone's turn: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7423089.stm

Recent Earthquakes [in China] due to "bad karma". Who was it that said the devastation in New Orleans was due to - can't exactly remember, was it the gays, or the ungodly - whatever.

The medieval daemons are not yet dead I feel. The vengeful God of the old testament is still about.

Sharon Stone's ex-husband nearly met a nasty end in the jaws of a Komodo Dragon (of all things), she had her own throat cut in a nasty riding accident and she had a brain aneurysm a few years back, so she probably knows a thing or two about bad karma....

I find the notion of karma rather disgusting to be honest.

    Talk about blaming the victims!

    Re: Hollywood strikes again

The Western idea of Karma is completely different to the Buddhist concept of Karma.

We tend to think of Karma as some kind of cosmic judiciary handing out retribution. Whereas 'Karma' is more about how our actions and thoughts impact on ourselves. Think happy thoughts, do nice things and you'll probably be a happy person. Think and act like an utter git and you'll probably be an utter git. But the universe won't spank your bum any more than it'll reward you for being nice. Its just about what is going on inside your head.

Shazza's idea of Karma is indeed disgusting. Real Karma isn't bad.

    Real karma?

I know what you mean. Karma is used by most 'spiritual' people as some concept of cosmic retribution. You get what you deserve so if something bad happens to you then you must have done something to deserve it. See also the just world hypothesisWikipedia reference-link.

There's a good article by Chilly here in the same vein: http://www.ukskeptics.com/article.ph...the_victim.php

LOL. Rather than 'real Karma' I should have put the alternative/original/Eastern concept of karma? Not having a good word day today Anyway, vastly different to Shazza's spiteful concept.

That all depends on which version of Buddhism you are talking about.

useful BBC idiot's guide "What is karma?"

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7425203.stm

I don't think I'll be able to enjoy "My Name Is Earl" as much now that I know the whole karma thing isn't even accurate from a woo point of view.

I love (i.e. hate) the way people try and give events largely out of human control some sort of human blame.

Umm. I don't mean to nit pick. But I do not understand this.Unless you are an actor, if you think and act like an utter git, there is no "probably" about it. You ARE a git

Yep definately living in cloud cuckoo land. But if you live in Hollywood you can't really see things from a normal perspective now can you.

I'd still give her one though. Definate bit of milfage going on there.
