Niggle contends that the JREF Million Dollar Challenge is a sham. I've moved it here for obvious reasons.

Some sources for your claim would be nice Niggle.

Why not look it up yourself?

    Go to www.google.com.

I take it I'm in for more name-calling and bullshitting for having the temerity to question your prophet then?

This must be a new kind of skepticism where you only question ideas you don't agree with and complain when someone questions the ones you do!

No, niggle, its the kind of skepticism where I'm giving you the opportunity to corroborate your claim.

That raises an interesting question, doesn't it?

If you were genuinely interested in questioning Randi's ideas, why would you need to be spoon-fed like a truculent child who won't take his medicine?

Surely you would have looked into it yourself already?

I have looked at the MDC in some depth, and there is nothing I can see that suggests it is a sham. The people who suggest this are usually just disgruntled that they could not unilaterally set the test conditions to suit them, realising that proper protocols will eliminate the chance of cheating. The rules are really quite simple and eminently reasonable, and there is no evident catch all get out clause for the JREF.

Niggle, please point to the case where the homeopath received an apology? I think I did see something about this, but if I recall correctly it was only some sort of misunderstanding.

Of course, Randi has limited time and resources, and it must be extremely frustrating going round in the same ever decreasing circles about test protocols with the same sort of deluded applicants who often can barely string a sentence together.

Yes, that's exactly the sort of excuse Randi uses for being selective about who's allowed to enter.

Isn't it usual for the organisers of a competition to set their own rules? It's not a scientific test, it's a competition.

Randi, who coincidently is not my god, does not deal with applications himself, he has dedicated volunteers for that. There have been cases where Randi has not known about applications (as he does not hear about them til applications are complete and a protocol is read) and mistakenly sais "X has not applied for the challenge" so I can see how he can make honest mistakes, but it will be interesting to see what Niggle comes up with.

He is selective in that he requires applications be accompanied by letters of support from academics. Why? Because the few applications the JREf received before that rule was introduced tended to go stale or where simply ridiculous, like the women who could make men need a pee with her thoughts. Needless to say, she didn't win the prize.

It is a fascinating phenomenon, this version of "skepticism". I'm really enjoying my time here and I'm especially intrigued by the pathological need to be told what to do which so many "skeptics" display.

When normal, inquisitive people hear of something that doesn't tally with their own experience or knowledge, they look into it - google it, read about it, do a bit of learning. When the "skeptics" here encounter this, they close their eyes, stick their fingers in their ears and refuse to look up or read about anything, demanding instead to be spoon-fed their information and attacking it vigorously.

That there may well be other information on the subject which the person they're talking to doesn't present, or that in seeking it they might find out something interesting for themselves instead of relying on commands from authority figures, doesn't seem to occur to them.

    Sorry, off topic.

Niggles psychic powers seem to be failing...I did Google several criteria..."Randi homeopathy dodge" and alike, it could take me an hour to trawl through all the links, the top ones seem to have nothing to do with what you are talking about so why not just post what you know and any links you may have...

    Why are you so difficult?

    Re: $1 million dollar sham.

Niggle FFS, if we were to go charging off rsearching every darned two bit idea that gets proposed we would barely have time to pee, let alone have someone else make us with their thoughts.

You quoted the case where Randi apologised. I think that has been dealt with above i.e. he did not know about the application, but please do point us to it with a reference if you know different. I am not suggesting you lay out the whole damn thing here!

Like I say, especially in relation to the challenges issued by Randi to various purveyors of doswing rods masquerading as explosives detectors (see Detect The ADE 651 Detector thread under pseudoscience) I have looked at the MDC in great detail.

Anyway, Homeopathy has been tested to destruction and it has been destroyed!

I don't want to make this topic about Niggle, I would genuinely like to discuss the MDC but is anyone else getting the distinct feeling the folks at spiritlove are having a bloody good laugh at our expense? Maybe I'm being paranoid...
