Don't take photos of the police!

    It is now illegal!

More worrying than the effect on amateur photographers, it will also curtail the activities of journalists.

You are already likely to be stopped by the police if you take photos of railways despite the fact that, as the link says, it's not even illegal.

This is the kind of stuff Stella Rimington is on about.

And taking photos of any kids that you are not related to could easily lead to serious misunderstandings.

What a great country we used to live in!

Re: Don't take photos of the police!

My appalling MP, erm, I mean: My MP, A Pelling, was briefly arrested by police in December 08 using terrorism legislation for taking a photo of a cycle lane in his own constituency. They didn't believe his explanantion and told him that his parliamentary ID card could be a fake. The funny thing is that I walked past as this was happening and could have vouched for him if I had realised that they were arresting him rather than just chatting to him.

There was a demonstration outside New Scotland Yard yesterday, with dozens of photographers breaking the law by taking pictures of pigs entering and leaving the building. I only know this because my friend Paul was at that demo, then spent some time in a pub, before turning up at yesterday's Skeptics in the Pub meeting a little less sober than was ideal. I had to rescue Ben Goldacre from him at one point.

If I was twelve then I'd call them "filth" or "PoPos". You are so behind with your slang. What are you, eighty?

This is ridiculous (the law against taking pics of police). It is a charter for them to abuse their power as presumably they can arrest anyone taking pictures of them acting improperly and destroy the evidence.

I've had a number of encounters with our friends in the force and although a small minority of these have been positive, regrettably many have not. They do not necessarily recruit the best and the brightest, and to give them the potential to do their worst un-fettered by reporting it is taking a bleedin' liberty. Literally!
