    99.999% of many common germs

Well, that's what the new instant foam hand sanitising contraptions at my work proclaim to kill.

How do you measure 99.999% of many?
Mousse from a bowl is very nice, but to put it on a person is demented!

By using a very large sample. Given that it's 'common germs', large samples are easy to come by.

Dunno, but I bet they are all 95% fat-free ...

Fat free, but loads of lovely alcohol mmmm. Fairly livens up the day to have a good sniff every now and then.

But even the beer I drink is 96% alcohol-free ...

We've been given desk wipes with 15% ethanol. It's ok to chew those I think.

I believe you need to get above 50% alcohol before it is a significant disinfectant. Urban myth suggests that alcoholics are drinking the alcohol hand gel in hospitals.

They are 'Probe and utensil' wipes which seems a bit odd but sure they are probably as strong a product as is on the market without needing restricted handling, given that individual desk cleaning went out years ago, I think its better than nothing, but I agree I don't think it is enough to do a proper clean.

I'm sure that non-alcoholic antibacterial soaps etc are next to useless because they need a much longer time to have an effect - hence why alcohol is so widely used, but it needs to be strong and also has the side effect of being an irritant to the skin.

What exactly is the benefit of a 15% ethanol wipe over 100% isopropanol or old fashioned surgical spirit (clear meths), both freely available in your friendly local chemist?

We've got some industrial hand gel, hubby got it when he was working at Pharma companies - it's made to taste truly nasty, like the anti nail biting stuff. He was told that was to stop people drinking it!! It also has no perfume so I end up visiting sweet old dears smelling like I've just chugged a bottle of gin!
