They changed the name because canteen staff were offended by immature comments. Those making immature comments were the ones misunderstanding the term 'spotted dick' that resulted in it being changed. It fits my definition just fine - something was changed to avoid offence through a misunderstanding of a term in common usage for over a century.

Can you actually give a genuine example of something that was changed to avoid supposed offence even though there has been no complaint?
If I could be arsed to look for negative evidence I would, but I can't! We all know it's a fool's errand!

A nurse I knew in the early 1970s was working at the Dreadnought Seamen's Hospital in Greenwich (all patients tested for all sexually transmitted diseases regardless of what they are in for), and had to help serving the Christmas lunch to the inmates -- sorry, patients. After the first half-dozen or so, she changed the script slightly to ask "Do you want sage & onion?" ...

I used to work with someone who shared his name with a very famous person. After a couple of months I was so sick of hearing people cracking lame jokes about it that I wished he would change his name just to avoid the tedious so-called humour. I can easily understand anyone trying to avoid repeat stupidity of the "dick" or "stuffing" variety and it has nothing to do with "political correctness".

I get impressions and catch phrases from Bruce Forsyth constantly.

It doesn't really worry me, but the seem to think that they where the first to think of the connection.

Anyone who doesn't know my name is Bruce, not Forsyth.

PS my spell checker (chrome, UK ) does not accept Forsyth by itself but with Bruce it is okay. What a Brucie Bonus.

    All the best,

It's back! Apparently the council received abusive letters and ridicule over its perceived political correctness ... but anyone who behaves childishly from now on will not get any pudding.

Richardens? Not familiar with the name, couldn't even find the word in my Richardtionary.

Dick Seaman and Dick Trickle never let their names interfere with successful car racing careers:

Unfortunately Dick Cumstain crashed and retired before earning a wiki page (and also I made him up which didn't help his career).

I think perhaps "spotted richard" is more insensitive than spotted dick. If my name was richard, and I had terrible acne for example.
