This chap was definitely using Windows. This would never happen with a Mac.

Mac versus Windows - let's have a heated debate.

I'm sure that this is the reason why I'm issued a Panasonic Toughbook at work.
Monday morning 0740, start up laptop and sign in to task allocation system.
0755 hibernate laptop and travel to first job.
0830 arrive on site. Open lid. XP fails to load video drivers. Running, but black screen. re-boot.
0955 BSOD, re-boot.
Things settled down for a while, until about 1500, when I heard the start up chime from across the room as the machine randomly re-boots itself...
I'm pretty sure that most of the problems that I see are due to the butchered build of XP, to allow my employers crappy "in house" applications to work.

My intention was actually to get a Windows versus Mac debate going. It's usually a sure topic for war, I find.
I am a Mac lover myself, although my company is all Windows based. This is probably why I have been without a company laptop for a week whilst the software is constantly being fixed.

What, don't understand. Macs are ipso facto much more stable and reliable than PCs. I have lost count of the number of times I have had to use my Mac at work because of the unreliability of the Windows system.
Imagine a Windows based car.
(Pressing the brake)
"Do you really want to stop?"
Yes
"Are you sure you want to stop at this time - I am a little paper clip and I can help you stop if you like"
STOP, STOP
"Windows has encountered an error and the stop program is no longer responding"
Reboot
"Your system was previously not closed down properly, do you want to go into safe mode"
NO, NO, REBOOT, REBBOT (still pressing the brake)
Blue screen
aaagghhh! (Smash)

I've wanted a mac for a while now. Being extremely shallow I just like the way they look ...
My husband, however, says that the software applications are limited on them (he might say something a bit more complex than that, but that's my understanding of it), and that macs are great if you are in design, but otherwise PCs have the edge, however awful that edge might be in real usage terms.
Would anyone agree with him?
I had to look after a few Macs for a while, as well as a large number of PCs (which were all different, with constantly changing hardware).
I'm sure unfamiliarity came into it to some extent, but at least when a PC broke, it was usually fairly easy to find out what was wrong.
With the Mac, a major problem just seemed to result in a dead machine, or if you were lucky, a sad face on the screen that made you want to strangle somebody.
I really hated the way someone seemed to have decided that there was only one way to do things, their way, not the right way.
I also didn't like the whole attitude. In the manuals, they'd never explicitly lie about things like upgrade hardware and say you couldn't stick in generic memory or disks, rather than buying identical branded/approved products at 2 or 3 times the price, but everything seemed very carefully written to avoid mentioning the possibility while also somehow hinting that a nice person wouldn't even think such things.
Recent PCs running XP seem pretty stable - there is the odd thing that will upset them (searches with huge numbers of results seem to kill Windows Explorer on my main PC, but it recovers perfectly OK), but I can't remember having an actual unwanted reboot or BSOD in years.
When I moved to XP, I also started running on a UPS due to occasional rural power glitches.
Possibly some previous Win98 crashes or hangs were actually dirty power, rather than just a poor OS?

Two fairly different things - hardware and software.
There's certainly an element with hardware of getting what you pay for, and with typical Apple premiums, one should have been able to expect better basic hardware/construction than the cheapest similar PC.
With laptop reliability typically being rather worse than desktops, that may be even more the case there.
I guess a lot depends on how much decent information there is around about various PC brands and models.

I would at one time. Applications are getting much wider now but it's something you do have to check out first. I am showing how fair and unbiased I am, obviously.
I run MS-Office on a Mac, simply because I have to for work. For my own stuff I use iWork. I believe games are a bit limited on a Mac but since I loath gaming - what a complete waste of time - then I think that is an advantage.
I am of course trying hard to goad some response, get it all a bit lively![]()

OK.
As for add-ons...
A couple of years ago, I tried to get a few-years-old apple laptop working with wireless networking.
Choices from looking around and asking a dealer appeared to be either a ridiculously overpriced add-in card, or (I think?) a cheap USB dongle which required a complete OS upgrade to work, assuming the new OS would actually run on the given machine.
As it is, since it was only for static use in a house where wired networking wasn't an option, I fixed it by buying a cheap access point and using that as an external wired<->wireless converter.
On a windows laptop of the same or somewhat older vintage, it would have just been a case of sticking in a cheap USB dongle.
