    Fry may stop twittering

Personally, I'm not keen on Twitter but Stephen Fry is famous for loving it. Now he may give it up. Doesn't this sound depressingly familiar? While the internet is great for putting people in easy contact with you, it also is bad for putting people in easy contact with you. If only you could choose your audience!

Bit of a storm in a teacup if you ask me. The offending tweet that made him think of leaving was something along the lines of "Stephen Fry is very clever and amazing, but his tweets are a bit boring".

Mr Fry says he's feeling a bit low; I think that's why he's oversensitive right now. Twitter is like anywhere else on teh intertubez- 50% interesting/nice people, 30% trolls, 20% adverts. I think I may be being generous there.

Never having twittered nor been tempted to twitter I have no opinion on this subject.

Ironically that would have made a good Twitter

I was not over enamoured until I started to try it.

This is one of my favourites http://twitter.com/ElGrandeMelon I think he posts on this forum under a different guise (reveal yourself ... as it were). None of the "I am in the kitchen making a cup of tea"... "I am drinking my tea"...

I'm a total Twitter convert. I don't tweet myself, but then the majority of people on Twitter don't. We follow the ones who do, and do well. Some are celebs, some aren't.

It's fabulous for learning stuff- the number of sites I've seen, articles I've read, campaigns I've found out about from people's tweets is phenomenal. It's also a really great way to organise real life action. See the recent Jan Moir debacle (although one could argue, and certainly Twitterers do, that it's simply gathering a virtual mob with cyber pitchforks).

I wouldn't be without it. All this nonsense about it being people talking about their day.....rubbish. Follow the right folk and you are entertained and enlightened and, best of all, get to entertain and enlighten right back, should your wit and general knowledge be up to it. Mine isn't. I merely lurk and learn, lurk and learn.

    Re: Fry may stop twittering

I gave twitter a miss after a shock joining facebook! I joined FB and signed up my old bosses daughter as a friend (her request) and noted she had 900+ friends and still wanted more! Then messages appeared on my wall, 3 of them taking the mick out of (what I thought was) the only good photo of me in existence. So wincing slightly I left the scene and never returned.

I get where Stephen's coming from - damn, It's SCARY!

I've commented before that I don't understand the concept of "friends" as used on-line. I wouldn't call people friends unless I'd communicated with them for quite a while and come to like and trust them.

But then, I've settled into a comfort zone of email, discussion forums and blogs. I've never been interested in social networking sites or other forms of virtual existence (like Second Life or role-playing games). I have a mobile phone but it's the most basic type for emergency use only (it's switched off 99% of the time) and I have yet to think of any reason to learn how to send texts on it.

I think that if people try to keep up with absolutely everything in new technology and its ever-expanding applications, they'd go nuts. Also, I suspect that people tend to stick with what they're comfortable with as they get older, unless they can see some major advantage in changing.

It would be much more interesting to have these thoughts yourself rather than vicariously. Such short messages can at best aim to be good sound bites and at worst are like an insect buzzing round yor face.

Can't stand Facebook. Can't see the point of it. It really IS people just blabbering on about their lives. I wouldn't call Twitter social networking, really. You can get a lot out of it without saying or doing anything at all, just reading and following links.

    Eh. I ain't converting anyone. But I does WhatEVAH. :P :)

It must be me, but I find the whole issue totally boring.

I completely agree with this, I've only started using Twitter since I got a sparkly new phone a few weeks ago, I did have a Twitter account previously but thought it was crap.

Once you learn what is actually going on, it is wonderful. It has been misrepresented by the media to be honest, I've no doubt most of what is on there is marketing or inane crap, but for a skeptic or someone interested in keeping up with the latest goings on around science/medicine/politics, it is indispensable.

It drives you to all the latest blog posts and happenings, you can follow and drop people at the drop of a hat. In actual fact, it is more of a private email system than anything else. Kind of like a progression from Facebook which has moved in the general direction of being an address book (with a lot of rubbish bolted on), Twitter has taken the messaging to a new level.

I didn't believe the hype with Twitter initially, but the hype was wrong.

I don't follow that many people, but Blue_Wode from the forum is one who is always pushing out very entertaining links. People like Ben Goldacre are good to follow, and there is the ubiquitous Jack of Kent (who does get everywhere I must admit )

I wouldn't be surprised if forums are actually less busy because of the amount of chatter going on on Twitter now.
