    England "omens"

Yes, the omens will really make a difference!

This is the sort of tripe John Motson usually comes out with.

Actually it seems that there is something in the strip colour. Red is associated with aggressiveness, and tends to have a positive effect on morale at the same time as intimidating the opposition. I recall reading not long ago of some research which showed that teams which wore red strip did better than others, averaged out over a long period.

I remember having a tour around Sunderland's 'Stadium of Light' some years ago, and was amused to note that the home team's dressing room was decorated in red, the visitors' in drab grey - it was done quite deliberately!

I'm not at all convinced. The fact that there are more top English clubs in red than any other colour could just be chance. Does the same rule apply in other countries? Not that I can think of. Very few of the top European non-English clubs dress in red.

Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs.

The seven dwarfs always left to go work in the mine early each morning. As always, Snow White stayed home doing her domestic chores. As lunchtime approached, she would prepare their lunch and carry it to the mine. One day as she arrived at the mine with the lunch, she saw that there had been a terrible cave-in.

Tearfully, and fearing the worst, Snow White began calling out, hoping against hope that the dwarfs had somehow survived. 'Hello...Hello!' she shouted. 'Can anyone hear me? Hello!'

For a long while, there was no answer. Losing hope, Snow White again shouted, 'Hello! Is anyone down there?' Just as she was about to give up all hope, she heard a faint voice from deep within the mine, singing; 'ENGLAND FOR THE WORLD CUP.'

'Oh, thank goodness!' she said 'at least Dopey is still alive.'

I have more luck with the ladies when I wear my red thong, although I often get asked to leave the church or put on more clothes.

It isn't just football - this is the introduction to the article: http://www.newscientist.com/article/...your-mind.html

    So.
    Germany on Sunday.
    What do you all think?
What do the omens tell us?!
My tea leaves suggest rather a lot of crap newspaper headlines with WW11 references. I must be psychic...

If a supposedly revived, on-form, England were only able to score one goal against the minnows from Slovenia, I don't need to be psychic to hesitate before putting any money on them to beat Germany.

There is nothing more to say now that Paul the Octopus has predicted a German win.
An octopus in a German aquarium who is said to be psychic has predicted the country's football team will knock England out of the World Cup.When consulted, Paul the octopus chose a mussel from a jar with the German flag on it ahead of one in a similar jar bearing the cross of St George. The two-year-old cephalopod has a record of predicting past German results in this manner, his owners say.Paul has so far correctly predicted all of Germany's results in South Africa.
He has a clean record. Not going to be wrong, is he?

I'm not sure if it's reassuring or worrying that the Germans can be just as potty over woo as the ill-educated Brits.

    Re: England "omens"

I think the vast majority people take it very much with a pinch of salt, though. I think it comes from the need to fill the anxious hours before a match, trying to find patterns to help reassure themselves. I don't think they really believe it ....

    This should help:

World Cup 2010: Bishop of Croydon offers prayers for the England team

... after watching the team's "remarkably aimless" game against Algeria, he has been moved to pen two prayers. The first consists of a two-word profanity: "Oh God."

The second goes like this: "God, who played the cosmos into being, please help England rediscover their legs, their eyes and their hunger: that they might run more clearly, pass more nearly and enjoy the game more dearly. Amen."
Strange lot in Croydon aren't they?

He was only bloody well right!

God, England were absolutely dismal. Honestly, they were a disgrace from start to finish. And I mean the tournament, not just the Germany game.
