Fred Phelps and his inbred family strike again!

The Westboro Baptist Church decided to take a break from picketing funerals and turn up at Comic Con, the big US comic, SF, film fan event (as featured in an episode of The Big Bang Theory).

They really aren't the brightest bunnies in the burrow are they? The Counter demonstration was ten times bigger and even more hilarious. Click on the pictures to get super-sized (what else at Comic Con?) images where you can read the banners:

My favourite is the Bender with the "Kill All Humans" banner.

Erm... has there ever been a Mighty Thor #5? It started at one-hundred-and-something because they re-named Journey Into Mystery. The relaunched comic in the 90s was just called Thor. Or have I missed something more recent?

You are quite correct of course!
Journey Into Mystery 87 it would be (Thor stories starting with JIM 83). I have the black + white reprint in front of me; 'Prisoner of the Reds' would you believe?! "These chains are electronically treated! I cannot break them!", a Kirby/Lee clunky classic!

I had a friend who used to say that all the time. And he couldn't do the fake accent properly.

I think that this counter-demonstration is a great example of how mockery works as a tool for dealing with woo. Pointing and laughing gets the message across and is fun too!

The Westboro (I always want to call them "Marlboro" for some reason) Baptists packed up early and skulked off. Something they haven't done when faced with threats and abuse, or with reasoned argument.
