I occasionally come across examples in print of people unwittingly using the wrong word but which nonetheless makes perfect sense in the context. A couple of examples:
"It had been hoped to use funds allocated for X, but it was discovered that this budget had been pre-emptied."
and (my all-time favourite), on a sick note written to a school:
"Please excuse Johnny's absence yesterday but he was suffering from dire rear."
